Fritz Lang Metropolis 1926 - Re-Visited by Giorgio Moroder in 1984

Inspired by Alain and his love for Original Soundtrack, I decided to play one of my favourite Soundtrack of the 1980s. In fact, it is not really with the Soundtrack that I fell in love... but with this 1926 classic, German Science Fiction movie.  This movie, considered by many to be the first ever science fiction movie, has been re-visited by Georgio Moroder in 1984 ... who replaced the classical music (once played "live" in theatre while the movie is being played) by a new wave, techno pop soundtrack typical of of the mid 1980s.

I was really impressed by this movie when I saw it for the first time (hard to believe it was filmed in the early 20s) and I remember in the late 90s, seeking and paying serious $$ for my VHS tape of this film! In 2009, a "fan" of the movie re-edited a DVD copy (pirate) of the film by replacing some parts of the film with images of better quality. Of course, I also purchased that one.

The story of this film is exciting because over the years, most of the original copies of the movie have either disappeared or have been destroyed. In addition, the original film was truncated repeatedly so that some versions contain only 25% of the original images and scenes. To give you an idea, the more recent discovery of lost sequences for this movie happened in 2005 (!).

I'm not a big fan of New Wave but I find that the music of Georgio Moroder written nearly 60 years after the original release of the movie, match very well the storyline.
